How do I tell a partner my body left the conversation before I did?
We were talking about weekend plans at the table. His voice got a little tighter about whose family we see first. Not yelling. I felt my chair get far away. I nodded at the right times. I even said 'yeah, your sister's is fine.' Inside I was already in the hallway in my head. Later he asked why I was cold. I was not cold. I was gone. I did not have a sentence that was not a fight and not a lecture. I do not want to make him the villain for a tone. I also do not want to keep pretending I was in the room. What do you actually say in the moment that is short enough to use?

I say 'I went small, I need two minutes.' We have used it enough that he knows it is not me walking out of the marriage.

I put a hand on the table so I can feel wood. Then I say 'my body left, I am still here.' Sounds weird. He gets it now.

Do you go quiet, or do you keep agreeing to things you do not mean, like the sister visit?

We pause the topic, not the evening. Dishes, water, then back. If we push through I am gone until morning.
