How do you start dating again after eight years without comparing everyone?
We ended in January. Eight years, one almost-engagement, a lot of furniture I still have. I went on a coffee date last week with someone kind, funny, on time. Halfway through I caught myself thinking he wouldn't have remembered my sister's name the way my ex did. Then I got annoyed at myself for using my ex as a measuring stick for a man I had known for 40 minutes. I also don't know what to do with my hands. Eight years of default weekend plans, and now Friday is this open field. Friends say just have fun. Fun is not the word. It's more like walking into a room where I used to know the furniture. I don't want to rebound and I don't want to sit in my apartment rehearsing the old relationship until next January. The coffee was fine. I just kept waiting to feel something decisive, like a click, and it was just coffee. How did you date after a long one without dragging the old person to the table?

40 minutes in and measuring him against your ex remembering your sister's name. i did that with a guy's coffee order. nobody wins that contest. the coffee date is allowed to just be coffee.

friday as an open field after eight years of default plans is the loneliest description. i joined a rec league so friday had a shape that wasn't fun. dating still felt weird. at least the apartment wasn't the whole weekend.

were you waiting for a click because that's how the last one started, or because friends said you'd know? i waited for a click for a year. it was more like getting used to a new grocery store.

i kept the furniture and it made dates feel like they were happening in a museum. moving the dresser was not deep. it helped my brain stop using the old map.

you're not failing at dating because one kind man didn't erase eight years in a latte. i needed three boring coffees before i stopped bringing my ex in my head like a plus-one.
