Am I actually decisive, or do I just pick fast so nobody waits on me?
People at work say I am decisive. I pick the vendor. I pick the lunch spot. I pick the color of the slide. What they do not see is that I pick the first option that will end the silence. Last Wednesday we were standing in the lobby trying to choose a place for a departing coworker's lunch. Three faces looking at me. I said the sandwich shop on the corner because it was closest, not because I wanted it. I wanted the Thai place. I ate a sandwich and called it leadership. At home I do the same with takeout. Fast yes, later resentment. I do not think I trust my real preference to be worth the pause. How do you tell confidence from just being allergic to people waiting?

I started saying 'give me thirty seconds' out loud. The room does not explode. That was news to my nervous system.

Decisive was my brand too. Then a friend said I always pick the closest thing. She was not wrong.

When you do pause, do you actually know what you want, or does the want only show up later as resentment?

I keep a short list on my phone of lunches I actually like. When they look at me I pick from that, not from nearest.
