Why does cleaning one sink help my mood more than any pep talk I give myself?
When my head is noisy I try to talk myself round. I stand in the bathroom and give a little speech: you are fine, just start, other people manage. It does nothing. The words bounce. What actually shifts the day, embarrassingly, is washing the dishes in the sink. One sink. Not the whole kitchen. Not a big reset. Just the mugs and the pan with last night's tomato. Ten minutes later I can answer a text I had been avoiding. I feel silly that a cloth works better than a pep talk. I also do not want to turn it into a personality — the person who is only okay if the sink is empty. Does anyone else have a tiny physical task that changes the temperature of the day more than thinking about it does? I am collecting boring ones.

One sink is my whole personality on bad days and I have made peace with it. Mugs, pan, done. Texts get answered after.

Pep talks bounce for me too. I wipe the hob even if the rest is chaos. Tiny and physical beats the bathroom speech.

I do the tomato pan first because it looks the worst. Once it is soaking, the day has started without a speech.

Do you have to finish the sink, or is starting it enough? For me the water on my hands is the bit that changes the temperature.

I fold the tea towel. That is all. If I try to tidy the whole kitchen I never start.
