How do you stop rewriting a text until the moment to send it has already passed?
A friend asked if I wanted to get dumplings Thursday. I wanted to. I wrote yes, then 'yes if you're sure,' then a paragraph about my week, then deleted back to 'sounds good.' By the time I sent anything it was 11:40pm and she had already made other plans. I sat on my bed with the three drafts in my notes app like evidence of a crime. It was dumplings. I keep missing ordinary yeses because I am busy making the sentence perfect. I do not think she is mad. I think I am tired of being the person who replies after the window. What do you do that is faster than your inner editor?

I send the first version if it is under ten words. Yes / time / place. Decoration can wait. I miss fewer dumplings.

Voice note. Ugly. Fast. They get the yes before I can sand it.

Do you rewrite more with friends, or also with family where the stakes feel weirder?

I have a note on my lock screen that says send the yes. I still rewrite. I send more than I used to.
