How do you finally book the doctor's appointment you have been putting off?
The reminder is sitting in my notes app: call the clinic about the cough that has been hanging around since February, and the checkup I skipped last year. I have rewritten it four times so it sounds less dramatic. Twice I opened the booking page, saw the earliest slot was in three weeks, and closed the tab because three weeks felt like admitting it was real. I am not even sure it is serious. That is the excuse. The other excuse is I do not want to sit in a waiting room and then freeze when they ask why I am here. I have the number saved. I have the hours. I still have not pressed call. If you finally booked something you had delayed for months, what got you over the last inch? Did you do it standing up, or ask someone to sit with you while you dialled?

I booked mine standing in the supermarket car park so I could not wander off and make tea instead. Still felt dramatic. Still glad.

Three weeks out is annoying, but it is also a date that exists. I used to wait for a better week and lose the whole season.

Did you already know what you would say about the cough, or is the freeze more about not having a sentence ready?

I asked my sister to stay on the line while I pressed call, then she hung up once someone answered. That last inch was the whole problem.

Write the reason in the booking notes if the form allows it. Then you are not relying on your mouth in the waiting room.
