Does anyone else feel guilty for being okay while people they love are struggling?
My brother is going through a rough patch — money, a breakup, the kind of month that makes the family chat go quiet except for him. I have been checking in. I have sent food. And then I had a good Thursday: a walk after work, a stupidly nice sandwich, a text from a friend that made me laugh on a bench. I felt the laugh and then I felt sick for having it, like I had stepped out of the play we are supposed to be in together. I know, logically, me being miserable does not pay his rent. That does not stop me dimming my own evening so I do not look like I am showing off a life. I almost did not post a photo of the sandwich. Ridiculous, but there it is. How do you stay close to someone who is struggling without shrinking your own okay days into a secret?

I dimmed my whole month when my mate was in it. He later said the sandwich photo would have been a relief, not a slap. I still overthink posting.

Checking in and sending food is already the job. You do not have to match his weather to be loyal.

I tell the person one small good thing on purpose, not as a highlight reel, so okay days are not a secret. I had a decent walk is enough.

Would he want you miserable in parallel? I had to ask myself that out loud because the guilt was louder than his actual wishes.
