Why does Sunday evening hit me like a brick even when nothing is actually wrong?
Every Sunday around 5:30, when the light hits the kitchen table that certain leftover way, I get this weight. Nothing is wrong. I have food. Nobody cancelled on me. Monday is a normal office day, not even a hard one. Still, I will be standing there with a mug and it arrives, like the weekend failed a test I did not know I was taking. Last Sunday I folded the same towel three times just to stay in the room. The laundry basket is still sitting by the radiator. I used to like this hour. I would put a record on and chop vegetables. Now I watch the clock and feel the day thinning out and I get angry at myself for wasting Saturday, even when Saturday was fine. Does this Sunday-evening drop happen to other people, or did I train myself into it by dreading Mondays for too many years?

5:30 on the dot. I thought it was just me being dramatic about Mondays. The light thing is so specific and I know exactly what you mean.

I do a grocery run at 4 so I am not standing in the kitchen when that hour starts. Fluorescent store lights are ugly but they break the spell a little.

Do you feel it on long weekends too, or only when Monday is right there?

Folding the same towel is so real. I wipe the already-clean counter. Hands busy, head still heavy.

I put something cheap on the calendar for Sunday late afternoon, even a library hold to pick up. Gives the hour a job.
