How do you ask someone to just sit with you when you have nothing to say?
My friend offered to come over Friday. I wanted that, I really did. Then I pictured us on the couch and me having zero sentences, just the hum of the fridge and me failing at being company. I said I was tired. I was tired, but that was not the reason. I miss people in a way that does not come with conversation attached. I do not want advice. I do not want to perform okay. I want another body in the room so the evening has a shape, and I cannot figure out how to ask for that without it sounding rude or sad in a way that makes them work. Last time someone came over I talked about the weather and a TV show I had not even finished, and then I was exhausted from the pretending. How do you invite someone in for company when your mouth is empty?

I tell people, come over, we do not have to talk, I will put something on. The ones who are worth it already know how to sit.

Fridge hum and no sentences is my favorite kind of hang when I am like this. You are not failing at being company. Quiet is company.

Could you text that you want company and no chat required? I sent that to my cousin. She brought a crossword and barely looked at me. It was perfect.

I used to cancel for the same reason. Now I say I am low-talk and they can leave whenever. Some people still come. That surprised me.

Weather talk is exhausting, yes. I put a puzzle on the table so there is something to look at besides each other's faces.
