Why do I completely shut down when someone says we need to talk?
My partner texted "can we talk when you get home" at 3:06 while I was in a warehouse meeting. I don't remember the rest of the meeting. I nodded at a spreadsheet. In the car I went blank — not sad, just gone. By the time I opened the front door I had already packed a bag in my head. It was about the thermostat. The thermostat. She wanted it lower at night. I laughed too loud and then felt angry that my whole afternoon had been a funeral for a relationship that was still sitting on the couch. "We need to talk" turns my body off like a switch. I can't be useful in the conversation because I already left. How do you stay in the room when those four words show up in the middle of a workday?

Thermostat. I once got "we need to talk" and it was about whose turn it was to call the landlord. I still had a bag packed in my head. I asked her to add the topic in the text now. "Talk later re: heat" is ugly and I can finish a meeting.

3:06 warehouse text would take me out too. I reply "is anyone dying or leaving" which is dark and she hates it and then she says no and I can drive.

Do you go blank in the conversation too or only in the waiting hours after the text?

Same switch. I put my hands on the steering wheel and name five things in the street until I can hear again. Not fancy. Got me through a "talk" about dishes.
