Why do I say yes in the meeting and then resent it the entire walk to my car?
Sprint planning yesterday. They needed someone to own the messy client notes. I heard my voice say I can take it before I had even looked at my week. People smiled. I am the reliable one. In the parking garage I sat in the car with the door closed and felt that hot annoyed feeling, mostly at me. I did not want the notes. I wanted not to be the person who makes the room wait. I drove home narrating a boundary I did not use. This morning the notes are in my inbox and I am already behind on the thing I actually care about. I do not think I am being nice. I think I am being fast. How do you buy ten seconds in a meeting without everyone looking at you like you became difficult?

I started saying 'let me check my board and I'll confirm by 3.' Buys the walk to the car before the yes is permanent.

The parking garage resentment is so specific. I know that exact seatbelt-still-off feeling.

Do they actually look disappointed if you pause, or is that a movie you play in your head?

I write NO on the corner of my notepad before meetings I know will hunt for a volunteer. I still said yes last month. The note helps maybe 40% of the time.
