How do you start exercising again when your mood is already in the basement?
I know I feel better after I move. That is not the problem. The problem is the version of me who knows that is not the version who is on the sofa at 6:20pm with work clothes still on, staring at the trainers by the door like they belong to a more competent housemate. On good weeks I run a short loop. On low weeks I bargain: tomorrow, after the meeting, after I eat, until it is dark and I call it. I have signed up for classes I ghosted. I have laid gym kit on the bed as a trick. I have walked to the end of the street and back and counted it, which helped once and then felt embarrassing. If you started again from a low week, what was the smallest first step that did not require a new personality by Thursday?

End of the street and back is not embarrassing. That is how I started in February. I still count it. The loop came later.

I leave the trainers on the mat, not in the cupboard. Seeing them at 6:20 is annoying enough that I sometimes just put them on.

Work clothes on the sofa is my exact hour. I change into the cheapest joggers before I argue with myself. Different outfit, slightly different person.

Did the class ghosting put you off groups, or would a boring repeat walk be enough?
