How do you choose between taking a mental health day and just pushing through?
Yesterday I woke up with that thick-head feeling, not sick exactly, just like the day had already used me up. I had two meetings I could have joined on mute and a spreadsheet that was not actually due until Friday. I lay there doing the maths: if I take the day, I will spend it feeling guilty and refreshing email. If I go in, I will spend it half-present and then snap at someone over a calendar invite. I have taken days like this that I wasted on the sofa, and I have pushed through days that made the next three worse. I do not have a rule. My boss is decent. That almost makes it harder, because I cannot blame a monster. How do you decide in the first twenty minutes of the morning, before you talk yourself into either heroics or hiding?

If the work can move to Friday and I am already snapping at calendar invites in my head, I take the morning at least. Full day only if I can leave the laptop in a drawer.

The wasted sofa day is real. I put one boring task on the day off so it does not turn into a guilt nap until 4.

How early do you have to decide? Once I have opened Slack, I never take it. The first twenty minutes is the only window.

I tell my boss I am out this morning, back tomorrow, without a big explanation. Less theatre, same result.
