Why is calling the clinic to confirm an appointment completely impossible for me?
I have the clinic number written on a sticky note on the fridge, black marker, big digits. I picked up the phone twice yesterday, got through the area code and the next two numbers, and hung up. Not because I do not want the appointment. I already filled the online form two weeks ago. They sent a text that said call to confirm. Confirm should be easy. I sat on the kitchen floor with the phone in my hand and my heart was going like I was about to get in trouble. There is no person I am mad at. It is a receptionist. I can email my boss about a spreadsheet. I cannot tap that green button. The sticky note is still there this morning, a little curled from the fridge magnet. Has anyone else gotten stuck at the call, and what did you do instead of just waiting to feel ready?

I emailed the clinic. Took four days to write the email. I still did not have to hear a voice. They confirmed by reply.

I asked my brother to sit in the room while I called. He did not speak. I just needed another body so I would not hang up on the third digit.

The getting-in-trouble feeling with a receptionist is so specific. I get it with the dentist too. Nobody is mad. My hands still shake.

Can you reply to their text instead of calling? Some places take a yes, still coming Thursday, and leave it. Might be worth asking in writing.

I wrote a three-line script on the same sticky: name, date, I am confirming. Then I read it like a takeout order. Still hung up once. Second try went through.
