Does the future feel like a hallway with no doors to anyone else, just more hallway?
Someone at work asked where I see myself in two years and I went blank in the break room with a yogurt in my hand. I pictured the beige hallway in my old apartment building, the one with the scuffed floor and the doors that always looked painted shut. That was the whole answer in my head. Not a job title, not a city, not even a vacation. Just more hallway. I said something vague about still being on the team and they nodded and filled the kettle. I felt behind, like other people have doors and I lost the map. I used to have a list, messy but real: a different neighborhood, a language class, maybe a dog. The list is still in a notes app. I opened it last week and it read like it belonged to a cousin. Is this familiar, the future going flat like that, and do you pretend you have a plan when people ask?

Beige hallway is the most accurate thing I have read in months. I also say still here and hope they move on.

I bought a cheap concert ticket for next month so the hallway has one door, even if it is a small one. Not a two-year plan. Just a date.

Do you tell people the truth when they ask, or the yogurt-and-vague version? I cannot tell which one makes me feel worse after.
