Does depression ever actually go away, or do you just learn to manage it?
I've been 'managing' for so long I forgot what not managing would even look like. I don't even have a clean name for it. I just know it keeps running the day. I keep waiting to want things again. Wanting hasn't shown up on schedule. I figured if anyone would get it, it would be people here. I don't need a perfect answer. Even a small thing that made the next day easier would help.

For me it went away for long stretches. Not forever, but long enough to build a life.

Management and recovery aren't mutually exclusive. Recovery is learning to manage before it overwhelms.
