Why does a slow morning text from my partner ruin my whole commute?
I leave the house at 7:40. She usually sends something before I hit the second bus. Tuesday there was nothing until 8:19, which is after I already transferred and had time to invent a breakup between stops. I stood on the bus holding the pole, rereading last night's "sleep well" like it was a legal document. When the text came it was a photo of her coffee and "running late, love you." Fine. Normal. My stomach had already done the whole commute in disaster mode so I walked into work already tired. It's such a small window. Not even an hour. I know she sleeps badly. I still treat a quiet morning like a verdict. How do you get through a commute when the phone stays dark and your brain writes a novel by the third stop?

Second bus is my spiral station too. I download a crossword and I'm not allowed to open messages until I sit down at my desk. I still peek at 8:10. Less than I used to.

Coffee photo at 8:19 would have wrecked me too after a dark 7:40. I sent her my bus times once so she knew when I spiral. She still sleeps in. At least I stopped rereading "sleep well."

Does she know 7:40 is your witching hour or are you suffering in private on the pole?

I put her chat under a folder named after my stop so it's one extra tap. Stupid friction. Helps on the transfer.
