Why do waiting rooms spike my anxiety even for boring routine checkups?
It's not the appointment. It's the chairs. I sat in the beige waiting room on Maple Street last Friday for a totally routine bloodwork visit and my hands went cold before they even called my name. Magazines, fish tank, that TV on mute with captions. I kept checking the clock on the wall like I was late for something I was already sitting at. Every time a door opened I jumped a little, then felt embarrassed, then jumped again. The actual blood draw was nothing. I walked out fine. It's the waiting that loads me up, like my body thinks the delay means bad news. I've started arriving later so I sit less, and then I worry I'm late. Anyone else more anxious in the waiting room than in the exam room?

Same, dentist waiting room. The fish tank makes it worse for me, weirdly. Too much to stare at.

I bring a paper crossword and a pen. Phone makes it worse. Pen keeps my hands busy.

Do you spike more if you're waiting alone, or is it the same with someone next to you?

I ask the desk how long they think it'll be, even if they shrug. Having a number, even a fake one, settles me a notch.
