Editorial Policy

This policy explains how AskDr content is created, checked and kept up to date.

Sources we use

We rely on primary sources: the original peer-reviewed publication of each equation, guidelines from professional bodies (for example ADA, KDIGO, NKF, NHLBI, Endocrine Society, AASLD, WHO) and government health resources (NIH Office of Dietary Supplements, MedlinePlus). Conversion factors come from molar masses and standard SI conversion tables. Sources are listed on every page.

Source verification

Every PubMed citation is checked against its PubMed record (title, first author, journal and year) before publication, and every external link is checked for availability. Any reference we cannot verify is removed rather than kept. Articles cite the most authoritative and current source available, preferring guidelines and original studies over secondary summaries.

Who writes and reviews content

Content is written and reviewed by the AskDr Editorial Team. Each article shows a byline and a “last reviewed” date. Worked examples are generated from the same tested code that powers the calculators, so the numbers in the text match the tools.

Testing

Every calculator is covered by automated unit tests that compare its output with worked examples from the source publication or an official calculator. A release is blocked if any test fails.

Reference ranges

Reference ranges are shown as typical adult values and labelled with their source. Because ranges vary between laboratories, each page reminds readers to use the range printed on their own report.

Independence and advertising

AskDr is free and supported by advertising from Google AdSense. Advertisers have no influence on our content; we do not accept sponsored articles or payment for coverage, and ads are labelled “Advertisement” and placed in reserved spaces separate from tools and text.

Updates and corrections

Pages show the date they were last updated. We review formulas when guidelines change (for example the 2021 move to the race-free CKD-EPI equation). Report an error through our contact page; confirmed corrections are published promptly.
